One thing that proved very beneficial for me early in our autism journey was receiving behavioral training, which at that time was required for my daughter to qualify for ABA services.

One of the biggest lessons taught in that training was that while some behaviors may improve over time, new behaviors are always going to surface that also need support, understanding, and redirection. Learning that early on helped keep me grounded and realistic in my expectations as the years went on.

Looking back over the last 15 years, I can honestly say that lesson proved very true. Caregiving for the severely autistic is not about reaching a perfect finish line. It is important to understand that there is a constant and ongoing process of learning, adapting, and supporting our loved ones through different stages.

For caregivers new to this journey, understanding that progress can come alongside new challenges may help avoid unrealistic expectations.
