What Matters

It doesn't matter what I've gone through in my life. It doesn't matter how betrayed I've been. It doesn't matter how many times I've failed in life. It doesn't matter how much of life's journey I don't understand. It doesn't matter what my beliefs are or what other people's beliefs are. All of the mysteries of life don't matter when you are placed with the responsibility of helping to protect a disabled individual with the mind of a small child.
What matters is that I see my intellectually disabled and profoundly autistic daughter's humanity, the value of her as a person, and my role to be her caretaker until I die.
Some may disagree with my sentiments here. But when you are boots on the ground, 24/7, serving as a first responder for a profoundly autistic individual who depends on you for protection and care, the rest of the world takes a back seat. Politics, current events, public outrage, cultural battles, religious debate, and all that's happening around us become secondary to the human being directly in front of you who needs you to show up, stay alert, and protect them.
